What color is your collar?

Happy Thursday, we are officially OVER the hump!

Today i was taking a survey (cause sometimes i do secret shopping) and one of the questions was: "Are you White collar or Blue collar?" Which led me to think? I dunno, which one am i?

I always thought white collar to be office work, businessmen in suits, neatly trimmed and manicured - yeah, women too. I figured blue collar to be those people who have to actually do physical work, moving, cleaning, sweating (in some instances), getting your hands dirty type work, but i wanted to look it up just to be sure.

I love that darn wikipedia, i don't care what people say about it. Not only did it give me interesting definitions for blue and white collar, it also advised me that it doesn't stop there, there's white, blue, grey, gold, pink and green! Who'd of thunk it? So let me define these for you, for those of you who didn't know.

White: refers to a salaried professional or an educated worker who performs semi-professional office, administrative, and sales coordination tasks

Blue: is a member of the working class who performs manual labor and earns an hourly wage. Blue-collar workers are distinguished from those in the service sector

Grey: refers to the balance of employed people not classified as white- or blue collar. Although grey-collar is sometimes used to describe those who work beyond the age of retirement, its most widely accepted meaning refers to occupations that incorporate some of the elements of both blue- and white-collar, or are completely different from both categories

Gold: is a neologism which has been used to describe either young, low-wage workers who invest in conspicuous luxury (often with parental support), or highly-skilled knowledge workers, traditionally classified as white collar, but who have recently become essential enough to business operations as to warrant a new classification

Pink: is employed in a job that is considered to be, traditionally, a female occupation. These traditions, generally, refer back to the first half of the twentieth century, during the Industrial Revolution. The term is formed by an analogy to Blue Collar Worker and White-collar worker. These terms were commonly equated with men in the workforce with jobs that demanded more manual labor or a more educated worker, respectively.

Green: is a worker who is employed in the environmental sectors of the economy. Environmental green-collar workers (or Green Jobs) satisfy the demand for green development. Generally, they implement environmentally conscious design, policy, and technology to improve conservation and sustainability. Formal environmental regulations as well as informal social expectations are pushing many firms to seek professionals with expertise with environmental, energy efficiency, and clean renewable energy issues. They often seek to make their output more sustainable, and thus more favorable to public opinion, governmental regulation, and the Earth's ecology

WHAT?????? Now don't even try to act like you knew about all these and I'm the last to know as always. Like WTF?

So since I'm a nurse I'm considered pink but that's the RN behind my name, does the BSN grant me a key to the white collared world? Last i checked nursing wasn't exactly a 'sit behind the desk, brainless, hey here's your meds' occupation so does that mean I'm a little blue too? Wiki goes on to say that pink collared jobs don't require much professional training? Then why am i up to my eyeballs in student loans and why did it take me 4+ years to get my nursing degree (and its at least 2 years without the degree) Sounds like more than one of those, "can i take your order or would you like fries with that" jobs....if i may say so, no offense to those who love it - I'm just saying.

Ok, i guess I'm off my soap box, but for the record, under these terms i am categorized as pink, however, my degree tells me I'm part white, when I'm working extra hard I'm blue, even tho I'm not retired I'm a little grey since its a mixture of white and blue and back in the olden days i was a little gold, just a little....when I'm recycling, can't i be considered green? LOL! OK so maybe not...

Anywho, i guess i fall under the rainbow, I'm a little of every color so hmph! (sticking tongue out)

Check out my rainbow collar....

CaBiN FeVeR!!!

Soooooo, i was happily walking from my time clock at work on an administrative floor up to the next floor to start my shift at work and i heard this eerie "beep beep" noise. Unsure of what it was, i was walking down the hall, looking strangely left and right in search of the noise and i happened upon a water cooler (the kind that's filtered directly through the water line) and slipped on a puddle of water, spraining my ankle and falling onto the floor.

As humorous as it's not, i immediately thought, "I've fallen and i can't get up, like forreal." So as i phoned a friend, no pun intended, i saw a lady going out to the porch to smoke and she came to help me up. As i had come to the realization that i couldn't stand or walk, my friend calls me back and comes running downstairs with the supervisor and help.

That not so happy day was March 15th at 6:25am and I've been idle since. I was pushed, down the street in a wheelchair (luckily the closest hospital is less than two blocks away) and taken to the ER where i was later told i had sprained my ankle and they gave me a set of unforgiving crutches, metal crutches. Not like the wooden ones i had when i broke my ankle all those years ago when i was in the third grade.

So here i am, ten whole days later, still cannot walk, laid up and trying not to pull each strand of my hair out one by one, cause i have cabin fever. Cabin fever is defined as this:
"Cabin fever is an
idiomatic term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in, for an extended period. Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, forgetfulness, laughter, and excessive sleeping. Cabin fever can also be known as a term for a lack of sexual intercourse. The word is also used humorously to indicate simple boredom from being home alone. The term was first recorded in 1918."

I think this describes me perfectly, hell maybe I'll send my picture to wikipedia and they can put me under this definition cause i am so tired of sitting here, with my leg propped up on a pillow, waiting for the swelling to go down and the ability to walk to return. I cannot walk, i cannot drive, i cannot squat to use a public restroom, i cannot cook and clean (which sounds like a good thing but it's not for someone who is so anal), i feel i cannot do anything. (insert sad face here)
(This may be TMI, but i cannot even shower, i am forced to climb in and out of the bath tub just to wash up.)

So while I run back and forth to doctor's appointments under workman's comp, I get to watch old reruns, everything I ever DVR'd and all the movies I've always wanted to see that happen to be on cable (trust me, it's not as fun as it sounds for someone who is such a busy body).

So the moral(s) of the story?
1. Don't be good and take the stairs like you always do cause its good exercise, take the damn elevator. Even if it is only one or two floors.
2. Don't always come to work on time, what does it ever get you?
3. Don't go a different way, if you have to detour cause say, your time clock isn't working, use the other time clock and then go back and go the way you always go.
4. Don't search around for odd noises or strange sounds, you're not Agatha Christie or Nancy Drew.
5. Visit your shut in friends, you never know when you might need the same.

That's all I have for now folks,

The Right To Know?

Soooo....

Last week i had the pleasure of serving as a juror for 6 days and it was a true eye opener.

Without going into too much of the detail, it was a medical malpractice case with a question of neglect.

A woman who had abnormal bleeding was ordered an ultrasound in which the results said there could be a possibility of "carcinoma" which screams cancer. Although the test wasn't positive for cancer, the test didnt rule it out either. The problem was, neither of the doctors told her of these results, they only told her she had an abnormal ultrasound, not of the possibility of cancer.

So the question was, did the patient have the right to know that her ultrasound results mentioned cancer, even though it wasnt totally positive?

For me personally, although i could be biased, i think i would want to know everything. Tell me every possibility, just in case -- hey, that's what they do in surgery. They tell you all the risk factors up front so that you can make a decision as to whether or not to go through with whatever the procedure is. Just because there is a slim chance 10% or even 2%, doesn't rull out the possibility, there's still a chance.

Have you ever read the lable on those birth control pills? Not only is there still a 0.5% or 0.1% possibility of pregnancy, (depending on which brand you use) yes, there's still possibility of pregnancy. They can also cause depression, weight gain, high blood pressure or even blood clots which can be deadly. Do you know some people have died from these blood clots related to the use of oral contraceptives? Although nobody is really walked though the risk factors of 'the pill', there is a huge discloser included of the proper use and risk factors, except, nobody really reads them.

According to the Patient's Bill of Rights at one of our local hospitals: "You have the right to full information in layman’s terms, concerning diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, including information about alternative treatments and possible complications. When it is not medically advisable that such information be given to you, the information shall be given on your behalf to your designated/legal representative. Except for emergencies, the physician must obtain the necessary informed consent prior to the start of any procedure or treatment, or both"

Had this woman known the results of her ultrasound, she could have chose to have a surgery that would have allowed her to possibly be here today.

Until next time...
